(AP Photo/Ethan Swope) U.S. NEWS Trump sends Marines and more National Guard members to Los Angeles An additional 2,000 National Guard troops, along with 700 Marines, are headed to Los Angeles on orders from President Donald Trump, escalating a military presence that local officials and Gov. Gavin Newsom don't want. Trump said the city would have been "completely obliterated" if he had not deployed the Guard. Read more. Why this matters: Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell said he had confidence in the police department's ability to handle large-scale demonstrations and that the Marines' arrival without coordinating with his force presented a "significant logistical and operational challenge." Monday's demonstrations were far less raucous, with thousands peacefully attending a rally at City Hall and hundreds protesting outside a federal complex. Additional protests against immigration raids continued into the evening on Monday in several other cities including San Francisco and Santa Ana in California and Dallas and Austin, Texas. Kennedy Jr. on Monday removed every member of a scientific committee that advises the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on how to use vaccines, and pledged to replace them with his own picks. Kennedy said the committee members had too many conflicts of interest. Read more. Why this matters: Major physician and public health groups criticized the move to oust all 17 members of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. Dr. Tom Frieden, president and CEO of Resolve to Save Lives and former director of the CDC, said Kennedy's actions were based on false conflict-of-interest claims and set "a dangerous and unprecedented action that makes our families less safe" by potentially reducing vaccine access for millions of people. Read more. What to know: In a post on X, the Foreign Ministry shared a photo of Thunberg on a plane. "Greta Thunberg is departing Israel on a flight to France," the post said. Adalah, a legal rights group in Israel representing Thunberg and the other activists, said Thunberg, two other activists and a journalist had agreed to be deported and leave Israel.
