Welcome back, let’s take a look at what’s in the news today: Teenage gunmen open fire at a San Diego mosque, killing three men and then themselves; Trump says he’s called off an Iran strike; and thousands of people are ordered to evacuate as a wildfire spreads in Southern California’s Simi Valley. Also, researchers uncover a medieval book in Rome with the oldest surviving English poem.

Trump said the current pause for negotiations was a “very positive development.” However there is no evidence Iran is set to meet Trump’s demands — many of which it has long rejected.
Crucially, Iran still has a big bargaining chip — its chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz, even as the U.S. military has enforced its own blockade on Iranian ports. Trump’s stated top objectives are still unrealized: Iran has yet to agree to abandon its nuclear program or its ballistic missile development, or cease support for its proxies in the region, including those in Gaza, Iraq, Lebanon and Yemen.

Rare, long-lost copy of the oldest English poem uncovered “Nupue. sciulun. herga. hefunricaes. puard. metudaes. maechti. and his.” If you’re wondering why we’re wrapping up today’s Morning Wire with what sounds like gibberish — it’s actually Old English. It translates to: “Now we must praise the guardian of the heavenly kingdom.” It’s from “Caedmon’s Hymn”, the oldest surviving English poem. Researchers were “speechless” following the recent discovery of a copy in a Roman library. See it for yourself and hear experts explain why it’s so important.
