A judge blocks Trump’s new bid to curb birthright citizenship, citing Supreme Court precedent

U.S. District Judge Deborah L. Boardman on Wednesday issued a preliminary injunction against an executive order that the administration said would target “birth tourism,” until a class-action lawsuit brought by immigrant families and advocacy groups is resolved. Read more.

- President Donald Trump has long wanted to end birthright citizenship, issuing a previous executive order declaring that children born to people who are in the United States illegally or temporarily are not American citizens. The Supreme Court struck down that attempt in June. “The Supreme Court has spoken: Children in the certified class are ‘citizens at birth,’” Boardman, appointed by President Joe Biden, wrote in the ruling. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Lawmakers ask Army to explain why it told a military unit to stop specializing in drone warfare
|
The 173rd Airborne Brigade, based in Europe, had been building its own drones and practicing the kind of warfare that Ukraine has pioneered against Russia and that Iran has fought against the U.S. — warfare that has killed and wounded American troops. Read more.

This comes as the world’s battlefields rapidly evolve and military tactics increasingly rely on uncrewed systems to fight. The bipartisan group of lawmakers expressed deep concerns in a letter shared with The Associated Press. They said ending the unit’s focus on drones would limit the military’s abilities to learn from allies, particularly the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

All things dance
The newly revealed cast of “Dancing With the Stars” includes actor Julia Stiles and Olympic figure skater Amber Glenn. It premieres later this month. Meanwhile, the AP was there as dancers in Buenos Aires competed at the Tango BA World Dance Championship. This striking photo gallery captures all the intensity and elegance of the dance. Friends from dance classes and I used to watch British competitors on “Strictly Come Dancing” religiously. The Argentine tango was always the routine we looked forward to most (usually saved for the later stages of the competition, because of its technicality). For us, how the couples performed that dance showed who would go all the way.
