Two Argentine officials investigating the origins of the hantavirus outbreak on the cruise that sailed from southern Argentina say the government’s leading hypothesis is that a couple contracted the virus during a bird-watching outing before boarding the ship. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media.
