Statewide mail voting for this year’s midterm elections kicked off Friday amid a churning legal battle over President Donald Trump’s attempts to limit the practice and mounting concern over Postal Service changes that some state officials blame for a rise in rejected ballots. The developments have created a sense of uncertainty about a popular voting method used by one-third of the nation’s voters. North Carolina on Friday became the first state to widely distribute mail ballots for this year’s elections, which will determine the balance of power in Congress for the remainder of Trump’s term. Iran claims a strike on a US ship in the Strait of Hormuz but the US denies it
|
Iran said Sunday it struck an unmanned U.S. vessel trying to enter the Strait of Hormuz, a claim that the U.S. military dismissed as a “total lie.” It was the latest salvo in a new flare-up of fighting between the two countries. The purported attack came a day after the U.S. military said forces struck three Iranian oil tankers in response to a missile attack on Navy warships. The Trump administration appears to have adopted a dual-prong approach to the conflict, responding militarily to attacks on the strait while going after foreign financial institutions that handle Iran’s money. But Tehran’s hard-line new senior leaders have signaled a willingness to dig in after weathering decades of sanctions. Read more.

Here’s how the summer box office blew up and Hollywood got its mojo back

Hollywood has just wrapped up its best summer in a decade and its biggest vibe shift since the pandemic. While that is partly thanks to some usual suspects — Spider-Man, “Toy Story” and others — much of what’s driven the resurgence has been refreshingly new. Gen-Z audiences have filled theaters. In some cases, it’s been the filmmakers, even more than intellectual property, that have lured moviegoers. There’s not a lot that movies like “The Odyssey,” “Obsession” and “Disclosure Day” have in common. But each drew audiences largely because of the filmmaker behind them. Read more.
